Sunday Services

Visitors, young and old, are welcome at our hybrid Sunday services. We gather at 10:30am from September to June, in person and on Zoom. Our worship services are a time for us to grow together as a community; a time for personal reflection and meditation; and a time to think about issues that are significant in seeking peace, justice, equity and compassion in our personal lives and in our relationships with our community and the broader world.

Children are welcome! Our Sanctuary includes a “children’s nest,” a cozy spot filled with self-serve quiet activities for our younger attendees who prefer to fidget are welcome to play while their grownups take in the service.

Our Fellowship is located in a part of Ottawa which is traditionally, to a large extent, Francophone. To reflect this language diversity in our community, we make an effort to include French language readings and content in our worship services, and once a month following the service there is a second French service, our célébration mensuelle francophone.

What To Expect on Sunday Morning

Unitarian Universalist Rituals and Practices

Sunday Services start at 10:30am with the Mindfulness Bell, a signal for those gathered to sit quietly and compose themselves for the service. Services usually include the following elements:

  • Welcoming words and land acknowledgement;
  • Lighting the Chalice – the symbol of Unitarian Universalist;
  • Joys and Sorrows – a chance for members of the community to share milestones and difficulties with one another;
  • Meditations;
  • Music;
  • the Offering – one half of money placed in the collection basket is shared with the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre Food Bank;
  • an Address.

Our speakers are not limited by dogma and we encourage free discussion and exploration of divergent views and opinions. As a result our services can vary widely depending on the topic of the week.

Open Pulpit / Open Pew

Unitarian Universalist principles encourage free and responsible inquiry in our spiritual journey and respect, caring and compassion in our relationships. Sunday morning talks are one source of inspiration for this “freedom of inquiry”. Sunday services are led by members of the Fellowship and the sermon or reflection may be given by a member or by a guest speaker. Guest speakers feature Unitarian ministers or other individuals or groups that are making an outstanding contribution in thought or service to our community.

Coffee Hour

A Coffee Hour for connection and conversation follows all services. Several times a year, we expand coffee hour to offer a full-blown potluck lunch. Everyone is welcome to join us!

What Do You Wear to Church?

There is no “dress code” and you will see everything from blue jeans to “Sunday best” worn by your fellow congregants. We encourage everyone to be comfortable, and express themselves as they choose! You may want to bring indoor shoes so you can remove your wet boots during slushy season!
