Worship Service: The Importance of Human Rights – Past, Present, and Future
The Importance of Human Rights
The Canadian Tribute to Human Rights, located on Elgin Street near City Hall, is a unique offering on the monumental landscape of the capital region — rather than memorializing a person or event, its focus is on the abstract concept of Human Rights. This is partly why it is called a Tribute rather than a monument. The concept of human rights is an ongoing struggle and an ideal to strive toward rather than something to memorialize in passing. Most monuments have a long and complex story that brings them to life on the street. The Tribute is no exception, and for my short talk with you, I hope to tell you the story of its life. How it came to be and how it is seen and used now in the city. We will look at the different ways The Tribute, designed by Montreal architect and artist Melvin Charney, is a special public offering, and reveal some of the hidden stories.
